For WED NOV 19

Che cosa vuol dire "RISCALDAMENTO GLOBALE?"

Do you have any thoughts about the possible relation between global warming and the current state of extreme weather in Northern Italy?

Yes, in English. (It's OK to say you didn't think about it, or didn't make the connection...)

FOR WED NOV. 5: AGAIN about the SPREADSHEET

USE the comment area below to ask your classmates any questions you may have about doing it right -- both for ARE verbs and for your grade records.

I don't know how many times I have sent out links, instructions, directions, corrections: and yet still someone keeps getting it wrong.

Per LUNEDI 3

Per il mio compleanno IO VOGLIO......

-- complete the sentence and say what kind of gift you want for your b-day.

Develop the sentence and change some components.

Use this structure to write what other people want for their birthday: your "significant other" (use something less stuffy, like boy/girl friend or fiance'); your parents, your children, your best friends.

I am introducing the use of POSSESSIVES: you should look online to find the rules that govern the possessive in Italian. I do expect that some errors will show up, but it will be a starting point for my explanation.

=====

SEPARATE SECTION (2)

write what you want to give as a present to this or that person for their birthday or for Christmas or whatever.

MODEL :  IO VOGLIO REGALARE (regalare means, to give as a gift)  ......

=======================
 give it a try.

===============

READ YOUR CLASSMATES' work and OFFER SUGGESTIONS if you see errors using REPLY.

Per MERCOLEDI 5 novembre

Use Comment to post at least 4 sentences with C'E' -  CI SONO based on the dispensa in your COMPITO.

Sunday, October 26, 2014

SCRIVERE - orale

FOLLOW the link to the page with the soundfiles

Per mercoledi 29 ottobre (3)

Here is how you ask and answer a very common question:

Use "comment" to tell us what you want to do when you grow up. If you want to be a Linux network administrator and you don't know how to say it in Italian, LIE: say that you want to be a PIZZAIOLO instead.

Read your classmates choices and follow the (grammatically) good examples. I will delete comments with errors.

So, ANALYZE grammatically the sentence very carefully and stick to the model (hint, do not forget the article).

Per mercoledi 29 ottobre (2)

USE "Comment" to create a list of words (by now you know the routine);

If you were to ask a child what they want to do when they grow up,

what kind of answers are you likely to get?

Fireman? Policeman? I wanted to be a "locomotive engineer" (train driver)....

Each of you will add one NOUN ( PROFESSION) to the list.

Follow the link and read the first paragraph. Make an effort to understand the content. Copy the COGNATE words and find the translation.

The article is about the future of Italy, young Italians, and the economy.

YOUR COMMENT: the first student will start a list of NOUNS that relate to the topic WORK or JOB. The second student will copy the word and add another one, and so forth.

Per mercoledi 22 ottobre

I sent an email to my friends in Italy asking them which was the most common way to ask "when is your birthday" in Italian.

Below, I posted my question and all the answers I received (some contain also personal messages -- nothing too personal that you can't read them).

TRANSLATE MY QUESTION to the best of your ability and FIGURE OUT HOW MANY people chose one version or the other. (Also, for fun, read and understand their messages to me.)

DO NOT post a comment. Give your answer in the COMPITO SCRITTO per mercoledi.

MY EMAIL:

"quale domanda e' piu' comune?

"quando compi gli anni?" oppure "quando e' il tuo compleanno?"

Fa parte della mia ricerca sulla deriva dell'italiano e la sua trasformazione sulla base di modelli anglo.

Grazie in anticipo.

(lo so , lo so, dipende dai casi e dal contesto, ma secondo voi qual e' la tendenza?)

LE RISPOSTE:

1) Direi la seconda.
2) Ciao Fabio,
la seconda mi sembra la domanda più comune,
Come state?

Ciao
13) Per me "quando compì gli anni..."   Baci a tutti
14) Compi gli anni.

Per LUNEDI 20 ottobre

Each student will write one word, in italiano, associated with ALLUVIONE.

The second student will copy the first word and start a list adding a second word.

The third student will copy words 1 and 2 and add a new word.

TRY TO STICK TO USEFUL WORDS (think about weather, bad weather, what do you use when it rains, what's in the sky when it rains, what kind of bodies of water overflow. You can list technical words as long as they are immediately recognizable -- they are cognates.)

BUON LAVORO.

Analyze this.

From an email I just sent to a friend in Italy:

"Ciao Francesco, come va? E tua madre come sta?"

Why did I use 'come va' e 'come sta'?  What is the respective meaning?

Don't look at other students' answers and leave a comment with your interpretation.

Watch the 3 youtube videos I sent you in the compito message.

In "comment" below, choose 10 food items and IN ITALIANO say that you either like it or hate it (see message for model.)  EX: I love zucchini, I hate bruschetta.  IN ITALIANO, of course.

Read and learn the words in Dispensa 18 on the homepage.
Identify the sound clusters that contain C and G + other consonants or vowels

Notice that the sounds are always regular.

Open Huffington Post, find words with C and G and copy them. Focus on the correct pronunciation of those words, and most of all of the C G clusters.

In "comments" below, report the HuffPost words you found (10 - 15 is fine)

Associate each day of the week with a color (it could be the color of your state of mind or mood. Per esempio: Lunedi' = Nero. Sabato = azzurro)

Per lunedi' 22 settembre n. 2

Find out how to you say in Italian:  "My favorite color is...." and write it.

1) Then, find an object that has that color (usually) and follow this model:

I LOVE THE OCEAN BECAUSE IT IS BLUE

2) Read the comment above yours. Click reply and say that you too love that color or that you don't like it:

Model: ANCH'IO (means= ALSO I, ME TOO)
NO, IO NON..........

Huffington Post Italia compito:

1) Find an article, copy the headline and translate it. READ AT LEAST the first two paragraphs. Copy ONLY THE NOUNS that you think could be useful. NO ADJECTIVES, NO VERBS. ONLY USEFUL NOUNS. DO NOT WRITE THE TRANSLATION (of course you should look up the meaning for yourself.)

2) Read the posting above yours left by the student who preceded you. Click REPLY. Copy the NOUNS from your classmate's comment and give the TRANSLATION.

CONFRONTO Huffington Post in ITALIANO e versione USA.

Is there coverage of similar events?

List a few of the words from the headlines that you understood.

If you understand the meaning of an entire headline, give us the LINK.

EVERYONE: Practice reading the headline out loud: I will ask ANYONE in class to repeat it (and give credit if you do a good job)

PER LUNEDI quindici settembre due mila quattordici --- AMARE

This activity requires attention and organization. No sloppy work, please.

Start from the COMPITO for today: read the instructions about the task about AMARE and USARE.

HERE you will only cover AMARE.

The first person will post NOUNS associated with AMARE. Who is this person? I have no idea. One of you, in any case. Ten-fifteen words will do.

The second person will first copy the list into his/her comment, then EDIT the list, eliminating words that s/he considers not too common or important, and ADD other words. DO NOT GROW THE LIST TOO MUCH. AT THE END WE WANT MAX 20 words.

The third, fourth, and fifth person, will repeat seriatim what person n. 2 did.

AFTER 5 students have worked on the list, the section will be closed.

The next person, person n. 6, will write his/her own personal list from fresh, starting another group of 5 students.
Yes, the second, third, fourth, fifth person will repeat the same activity as the first group.

Next group of five, same routine.  GOT IT?

Per lunedi quindici settembre

The distribution rule for the indefinite article in English (you must get accustomed to this kind of lingo) states that   < A > is used before words that begin with a CONSONANT: ex: A TEACHER.

The indefinite article < AN > is used in front of a vowel: ex: AN IDEA.

How do you account for   < A UNIVERSITY> , < A URINE SAMPLE> etc?

Per LUNEDI quindici settembre (1)

What is a NOUN? An ADJECTIVE? A VERB?

How do you say Noun, Adjective and Verb in Italian?

Check the "Huffington Post" -- Italian edition, and look for article whose headlines you can understand, or at least make sense of.

Here is one I found toward the bottom of the page:

http://www.huffingtonpost.it/2014/09/05/bambini-bilingue-imparare-intelligenti_n_5772288.html?utm_hp_ref=Italy

In 'comment' copy the web address (URL) of the article and a brief interpretation.

ALSO, very important, LIST THE NEW WORDS YOU LEARNED (only the headline, not the entire article) and that you think will be useful in the future.

====================
Read your classmates postings and leave a comment to the articles you liked or that you found interesting.

FOR WED. SEPT 10

This has nothing to do with the class, but I want to bring your attention to the fact that you are probably among the youngest "eye witnesses" of the 9/11 attack that will be able to tell -- many years from now -- where you were and what you were doing when you heard of it (probably you were already in school or on your way to it.)

You will be asked by younger generations to tell your story as you remember it. It may be worth for you to write down your memories now that those events are still fresh in your mind. In the future you will be able to go back and re-visit details that inevitably will slip from memory.

NOT REQUIRED: use 'comment' to tell your classmates ONE LITTLE DETAIL that in your memory is associated with 9/11. EX: at that time I was living in SoHo and for a week or two that area was open only to residents. I remember having to show my driver's license in order to get back to my apt. To this day, whenever I see police barricades, those wooden, light blue barriers used to cordon off a street, my mind immediately brings back the images and sounds of those days.

Per MERCOLEDI 3 Settembre

Write a short bio (in inglese) telling your classmates WHY you are talking Italian (click "comment" below.)

After you finish your comment, read other students' comments and add a note to those you find most captivating.  You can leave as many "metacomments" as you want. The more the better.
